The Guide to YouTube Shorts for Brands

Shorts put short vertical videos in front of people who don't follow you yet. This guide covers why brands use them, how they get recommended, how to work with Shorts creators, and how to find a style that fits your brand.

1. Why add YouTube Shorts to your marketing

Shorts are vertical videos of up to three minutes that play in YouTube's Shorts feed, on channel pages and in search. Viewers swipe from one to the next, so a Short can reach people who have never heard of your brand.

For brands this means three things. First, discovery: a Short is shown to viewers based on what they watch, not only to a channel's subscribers. Second, cost: a short video is quicker to make than a long one, so you can test several ideas instead of betting on one. Third, reuse: a Short that works can be licensed and run as an ad, and the same idea can be adapted for other short-video platforms.

Shorts work best as part of a mix — they create first contact, and longer videos, your site or a product page close the deal. Plan where a viewer goes next before you brief anyone.

2. How Shorts get recommended

YouTube describes its recommendations as following each viewer: what they choose to watch, how long they keep watching, what they skip and how they respond. That is why a Short from a small channel can travel far, and why a large channel is no guarantee.

What you can control is the video. The first seconds decide whether people keep watching, so open with the product in use or with the problem it solves rather than with a logo. Keep one idea per Short. Write a clear title and description, and use the creator's natural voice — viewers skip what looks like a TV spot.

Sponsored Shorts must be disclosed. Turn on YouTube's paid-promotion setting when uploading and say it plainly in the video or description. Treat this as part of the brief, not an afterthought.

3. How to work with Shorts creators

Start from the creator's recent Shorts, not their subscriber count: look at typical views across several recent videos and at how the audience reacts in the comments. The free sponsorship rate calculator turns a price into a cost per 1,000 expected views.

Agree the scope in writing: what you provide, what the creator makes, how many review steps and revisions, the delivery date and whether you may reuse the video as an ad. On Sponmi this is the package — each one lists those terms, and you approve the script before filming and the final video before it goes live.

Give creators room. A short brief with the one message that must land, the claims that are allowed and the things to avoid gets better results than a script written by the brand.

4. Finding your content style as a brand

Brands that do well on Shorts usually pick a repeatable format: a recurring problem-and-fix, a quick demo, a before-and-after, a reaction or a 'did you know'. A format makes each new video easier to brief and easier to compare.

Test a few formats with different creators, keep the briefs similar, and compare results per video — views, engagement and cost per 1,000 views. Keep what works, retire what doesn't, and re-book the creators whose audience responded.

Your brand voice can differ from your ads. On Shorts, clarity and honesty travel further than polish: show the product doing its job, say who it is for, and let the creator be the person speaking.
